Erie Biscuit Day

The biscuit tradition in the old mining town of Erie goes back to the 1870s. Back then the town’s handful of bakers made the biscuits and the local ladies made the Mulligan stew. Back in the day, women were admitted free (perhaps as thanks for the stew). Today, men and women pay the same: 2 biscuits, 2 sausages, sausage gravy and a choice of coffee, milk or juice for $8. A smaller portion of the same (1 biscuit and 1 sausage, plus beverage) is offered for $5. Note: Prices have not been confirmed for 2023. These are 2021 prices.)

In addition to this comfort-food classic, the FREE event features a cake walk, raffle drawing, craft booths, historic photos and live music.

Local restaurants compete in a stew contest as homage to the Mulligan stew of the past. Biscuit Day attendees get to participate in a blind taste and vote for their favorite stew. The nostalgic festivities take place on Briggs Street, downtown Erie.
